ANALOGOUS WOOD-WORK BY MICHIEL LELIVELT

Michiel Lelivelt is a third-generation design representative and a follower of his father’s and grandfather’s woodwork passion, united under the Lelivelt family business, running for over one hundred years. ‘My challenge is to make beautiful and functional furniture. Since childhood, I have been interested in architecture and design, and later trained as a carpenter’, explains Michiel. The long experience and the relentless interest in the development of the profession encouraged Michiel to choose his own path and in 2005, become the founder of Stong Wood. From that moment on I keep myself busy with old style timber and wood furniture.’

The birth of the Analogue table series in 2013, illustrates Michiel’s special approach to design. ‘I am convinced that design is not a sketch or a drawing but a creative process. I fit to rely on intuition and feeling as my mind works with the material (wood) to achieve the correct shape, in the process of trying again and again. Over the years, this awareness has grown and I work with more and more confidence in my own real product.’

Analogously, the Analoog table is a good example of this ‘Hand Framed’ approach. The table consists of a solid American walnut wood frame and a ‘berkenplex’ (thickened) sheet veneer. The sturdy yet lightweight and flexible design ensures that the table easily adapts to uneven surfaces. While the aesthetic lines and smooth edges relate to the Art Nouveau and Scandinavian design for a contemporary look that fits in both classic and modern interiors. A very refined dining table. Available for purchase at the OODE webshop.

WIRE LAMPS BY SALVATORE FRANZESE

Salvatore Franzese is an Italian born and Dutch based product designer, residing in his own Eindhoven studio. Salvatore’s design approach involves being on the look for new goals and challenges in the handmade technical approach. ”Producing an object with your hands is a way of projecting yourself, involving your head, heart and soul and therefore this is the reason why the piece doesn’t just express a concept but also talks about you it’s you.”, explains Salvatore. OODE currently features a part of his Procreation series, entitled Wire Lamps that are covered and rolled up with kilometers of silk thread, available in a variety of colour.

GER LATASTER

Ger Lataster (1920-2012), generally acknowledged as an abstract expressionist, gained international prominence during the heyday movement in the 50s and 60s. His works enriched major exhibitions such as Documenta in Kassel and Vitality in Art at Stedelijk Museum, whose early day director – Sandberg, had an exceptional appreciation for the Dutch artists’ work. Lataster’s later presentations were held in various museums such as the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht, Dordrecht Museum, and the Singer Museum in Naarden.

Throughout the years, Ger Lataster’s differing stroke forms, acknowledged a certain variety of discovering a momentum and translating it into an emotionally moving event of an intensive visual in both composition, colour and shape. Using geometrical figures and symbolic objects, the artist combines abstraction and figuration into ‘Lataster’s’ unique kind of expressionism.

SUNFLOWER STANDING LAMP BY DIRK VANDER KOOIJ

The SunFLOWER standing lamp is Dirk Vander Kooij’s new lighting concept, that originated from a two-year research and prototyping process on Fresnel Lighting. Instead of a pendant lamp, the Sunflower is mounted on a metal frame with multiple branches. Each of these branches ends in a Fresnel lamp module, like the buds on the stem of a flower. The lamp module itself consists of two plastic halves, enclosing LED-modules. The hundreds of dimmable LED-lights produce over 50.000 hours of light and are easy to replace.

sunflower_3_different_sizes_-_vierkant_1024x1024

A sunflower has a special relationship to the sun. The flower itself resembles quite clearly the shape of the sun, but more special is the direct relationship with light. During its growth, sunflowers tilt throughout the day to face the sun. The Sunflower lamp uses this heliotropism in a reverse way. Instead of tracking the light, this sunflower is the source of light. Each lamp rotates around a center core, a metal ball, making the direction of the light easy to adjust and to aim where needed.

MAKE&MOLD RYB BY HANDMADE INDUSTRIALS

HandMade Industrials duo Rutger de Regt and Marlies van Putten share an interest in experimental design by process-based principles to create and combine a poetic reflection on current societal themes. Their recent work entitled Make&Mold RYB is a series of unique and wonky vases of colourful hues and blown bubbly shapes, currently on display at OODE. The flexible mold and bio-degradable polymers go through a handcrafted production technique to form gummy skews but keep an organic structure of sculptured pottery. As for the colour blend, the designers use red, yellow and blue pigments, to mix and mingle patterns and give the object a pleasingly soft vibrancy.

TRANSCIENCE MIRROR BY LEX POTT AND DAVID DERKSEN

The transcience collection of Lex Pott and David Derksen shows the beauty of the natural oxidizing process inherent in mirrors. This process can be regarded as degradation, however this project exhibits the beauty of this material transition of silver. By accelerating and manipulating this process, the Transcience mirrors illustrate the various stages of oxidation through the repetition of fundamental geometric shapes. Depending on the time that the silver is treated, different colour tones can be achieved, ranging from gold to brown, to purple to blue.

THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF HAZEL LING

We have work of photography of Hazel Ling at the Gallery. Hazel about her work: “I am a mother of two, a dreamer, a foodie and an explorer. ”It’s my passion to paint with the camera. I created my own style, where I play with movement, colour and light, which gives my work a surreal and painterly look. Photography for me is a way to chase my dreams and to leave bad dreams behind. A place to find my inner self and to release emotions. During the process I don’t plan ahead, but just follow my intuition. I work a lot in nature, either during my travels or in the landscapes near my home in Hilversum.”

THE BEAUTY OF CABBAGE CAPTURED IN PORCELAIN BY NINA SAJET

Since 2010 Nina Sajet opened her Ceramic studio in Amsterdam – this is where she creates art objects,  jewelry and everyday objects. In these pieces she capture the beauty of the unseen ordinary. Most of the time a new collection starts from an intuitive image or dream.05 (2)The Leafspoon serie is one of Nina’s first projects in which she captures the beauty of nature in its most unadulterated form. She was inspired by authentic porcelain, where nature plays an important role in the decoration. By experimenting how natural forms could take a life on its own as functional objects, Nina found out that the leaf could serve perfectly as a bowl and the peduncle as a handle.

When making the molds for the spoon, nature is literally copied. All sorts of cabbage types form the basis for the molds. Liquid plaster is cast around the different cabbage leaves. Once hardened porcelain is poured into the molds. After the baking the different components are melted together with drops of porcelain. The connections are highlighted by gold accents. Each spoon is unique by its endless combinations and its manual way of connecting.

STREAMLINED BY STUDIO ROEX

The Streamlined collection by Studio Roex reflects a loyal impression of a bland element of plywood. Due to a constructional value, plywood customarily serves a quite organic purpose. “Its a genuine shame,” comments Studio Roex, “because a mixed layers of connected timber veneer is what creates it so unique.”

streamlined lamp 1

Streamlined aims to exhibit a loyal temperament of plywood by emphasizing and highlighting a several timber layers that are customarily usually marginally visible. By CNC logging a two-dimensional plywood piece material, a three-dimensional element can be produced. As a result, a settlement of layers light out, formulating a pointed interplay of lines.

EXPLODED VIEW BY SAM VAN GURP AND ESTHER JONGSMA

Now at OODE we have a series of lights by dutch designers Sam van Gurp and Esther Jongsma, called EXPLODED VIEW; Do we understand what happens when we dim the lights? And to what extent could the dimming become part of the design? EXPLODED VIEW shows that the key factor is to move the light source closer to the object or further away. After all, the sun never fades; it is the earth that moves closer and further away, causing the light to reflect, change colour, dim or die. Ultimately the experiment has led to a series of lamps representing different approaches: Cumulus, which dims through layering; Eclipse, which keeps the light contained or sets it free; and Lunar which plays with reflection….
